And that's a series win

WIU Baseball claimed its first series win of the year at SEMO

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Neither Western Illinois nor Southeast Missouri was going down without a fight as it took 11 innings to decide the series winner. The Leathernecks snapped SEMO's season-opening winning streak with a 9-2 decision Friday, evened things in a 14-2 loss Saturday, and rebounded with a 5-2 extra-inning victory on Sunday (Feb. 24).

Western used three pitchers in the series finale and each of them delivered. Justin Foy was given the start, going five innings with one hit and one run, before he turned things over to Jack Carberry in the sixth. The Palos Heights, Ill., native earned his third career win by yielding just one run on five hits in five innings, and newcomer Jordan Cheek walked away with the save after a three up, three down 11th frame.

The decision improved the Leathernecks' record to 2-4 while Southeast Missouri fell to 5-2.

"I'm excited for our guys," said head coach Ryan Brownlee.  "It was great to get a hard-fought road series win.  SEMO is a really good team, hard to navigate from an offensive standpoint.  The whole team did a great job of keeping their composure in a tough environment.  We had two sophomores (Justin Foy, Jack Carberry) and a freshman (Jordan Cheek) pitch extremely well.  We let a few at-bats go in the middle innings but settled down in extra innings to put together some great ones. We still have a lot of room for growth which is exciting!"

Tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation, each side left a pair of runners stranded in the 10th inning before Western loaded the bases with no outs in the next frame. Trenton Bauer led things off with a single to right field and three at-bats later CJ Schaeffer Jr. looked onto the field with a teammate standing at each square.

He singled to right center to break the stalemate at 3-2 and Kevin Raisbeck, who finished the game 3-for-3, sent a two-out, two-RBI double to right field to cement the final score.

Western outhit the Redhawks, 10-5, while the home team left 14 runners on base.

Next up for the Leathernecks is a three-game slate at Southern Illinois Friday – Sunday (March 1-3).
