Western Goes Toe-to-Toe with Summit League Regular Season Champion

The Leathernecks took a set from red-hot South Dakota at home

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team snapped 2019 Summit League regular season champion South Dakota's streak of nine-consecutive set victories before dropping the match, 3-1 on Friday (Nov. 15). With the defeat, the Purple and Gold drop to 6-22 (3-12), while the Coyotes improved to 26-1 (15-0).

The Leathernecks dropped the first set after falling into an early hole against the Coyotes. Elle Shult slammed a kill down the middle of the court as WIU trailed 9-5. Cassie Hunt delivered a service ace to keep the Leathernecks in the opening-set, down 18-15. South Dakota took the final seven out of ten points to win the set, 25-18.

Back-to-back Coyote attacking errors handed Western an early 8-4 advantage in the second set. Aubrey Putman gave the Leathernecks a 20-16 lead after burying a ball in the corner of the court. On the Leatherneck set point at 24-20, Madeline Dieter and Mackenzie Steckler teamed up to send away a South Dakota attack to take the set 25-20.

The Coyotes quickly jumped on top in the third set after taking a 5-0 advantage. With South Dakota up 14-9, Mariah Mitchell laced the ball in between two Coyotes for another kill. Steckler rose high for a block to try and keep Western in it, behind 17-11. South Dakota did not look back from there and took the third set, 25-16

Western started the fourth set strong when Shult and Dieter formed a wall for a 6-4 edge. Steckler stood alone and picked up a block to draw the set even, 11-11 and later spiked a kill to help the Leathernecks gain ground, trailing 20-16. The visitors pulled away to win set four along with the match.

Putman led the Leathernecks with nine kills, while JoJo Kruize logged eight. Jessie Connell paced Western Illinois with 17 assists. WIU is back on the court for Senior Day against Denver on Sunday (Nov. 17) at noon.
