Volleyball Battles to Five

WIU volleyball takes North Dakota to five sets.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois volleyball hosted North Dakota to kick off their home weekend Friday (Nov. 1) taking the team to five (21-25, 25-11, 22-25, 25-22, 15-12)

The Leathernecks set the tone for the night with a close first set. An early Western lead was quickly combated by a North Dakota push to tie the game at 14-14. WIU unable to combat the run despite a late push from Mariah Mithell dropped set one.

An early lead allowed the Leathernecks to dominate the second set with a 14-point advantage. WIU kept the pressure on from behind the service line with four aces in the set alone with Erika Moore notching two of her own.

North Dakota fighting back to earn the lead to start the third. WIU battled to keep themselves in contention throughout the remainder of the set.

A Leatherneck push at the end of the set led by JoJo Kruize with three consecutive kills ultimately fell short as the Fighting Hawks took the two-set advantage.

Another quick-start sustained for WIU to take the fourth. Pulling away to a five-point advantage mid-set the Leathernecks forced UND to have to work their way back in. As the Fighting Hawks closed in Steckler terminated the ball to send the match to five.

Elle Shult tied the game for Western with a solo block at 5-5 in the fifth. North Dakota able to pull away with another small lead was quickly equalized as Shult ties the game again at 8-8 with back-to-back kills. Unable to capitalize on the ties Western attempted a run at game point powered by a Cassie Hunt ace but fell in five.

Western Illinois returns to Western Hall Sunday to take on the North Dakota State Sunday (Nov. 3) in their second meeting of the year.
