DePersio Powers Leathernecks to Four

Standout efforts from DePersio propels WIU to a close four sets.

MACOMB, Ill. – In their second close match of the weekend, the Western Illinois volleyball team hosted North Dakota State in Western Hall on Sunday (Nov. 3).
 
Gabby DePersio had a standout performance with 22 digs in the four-set match to combat the aggressive Bison offense.
 
WIU took an early three-point lead to start the set answered by an NDSU push to tie. Western came out on top of the first tie of the game fueled by an ace from Cassie Hunt. The Bison made a push for the second tie of the set at 11-11. With a kill from Steckler, the Leathernecks were able to take the lead for the final time cruising to a first set victory.
 
No team was able to take a definite lead in the second set as the score teetered back and forth until the Bison pulled away at the end of the set. The last tie came at 21-21 before a final NDSU push.
 
Pushing ahead with the lead mid-game the Leathernecks were able to push ahead despite the Bison offensive pressure. The Bison worked their way back in to tie the game at 19-19. WIU was able to hold their lead throughout two NDSU timeouts. At the end of the game, NDSU was able to equalize the score three times at 23-23, 24-24, and 25-25 before taking the third.
 
A close end to the third set the tone for the fourth. The score tied until the Bison were able to pull away with the first lead of the game at 15-13.  WIU continued to fight to stay within two points of the Bison. With. a solo block from Steckler the Leathernecks tied the score at 18-18. With Hunt back to serve WIU makes a final push but falls in four to the Bison.
 
The Leathernecks will hit the road for the final time in regular-season play Friday (Nov. 8) to take on Oral Roberts followed by a match up with Omaha on Sunday (Nov. 11).
