Clarke and Peters Close Out Homestand In Style

The Leathernecks record their fourth straight win and third consecutive shutout.

MACOMB, Ill. - After Western Illinois University hosted another thrilling homecoming week, both Zoe Clarke and Lauryn Peters relived the incredible festivities again as the duo scored less than five minutes apart in a 2-0 shutout of the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons (4-5-2, 0-1-0) on Sunday (Oct. 6) afternoon.

"Our players worked really hard to pull off two big results at home this weekend," assistant coach Josee Primeau said. "Both Zoe (Clarke) and Lauryn (Peters) came out big today with crucial goals when we need them to help give us a lead."

The Western Illinois women's soccer team (6-5-1, 2-0-0) has now won four straight matches in a row with an undefeated mark (3-0) at the Northwest Field, and in Summit League play (2-0). The last time the Leathernecks won four straight games was in 2009.

WIU found the back of the next midway through the second half. After a Mastodon foul, Clarke lined up for the free-kick just outside the top of the box and soared it into the right corner of the net to give the Leathernecks a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute.

Less than five minutes later, Peters (59') earned her first goal of the season in style. On a corner, Clarke guided the ball to the Summit League Player to Watch who sprinted to the middle of the box for a header that sailed to the back of the net.

Ines Palmiero Herrera hasn't allowed a ball by her in three straight matches and in any League action for her seventh career shutout. The fourth shutout of the season moves her to third all-time in a season tying Meghan Tyk (2007). She stopped all five shots Purdue Fort Wayne had as she now is only one more win away from passing Samantha Clark (2006) for fifth all-time.

Eight players all notched a shot in the attack for WIU, including Amy Andrews, Natalie Sielaff, Lynette Hawkins, and Clarke, who hall had multiple. Out of the 13 total shots, eight were on frame.

Western closed out the five-match homestand with a 4-1 mark and heads to Denver on Thursday for an 8 p.m. kick-off.
