MACOMB, Ill. - With the excitement of homecoming in the air at Western Illinois University, Jenna Lundgren delivered for every Leatherneck as she scored the game-winning goal in The Summit League opener against the Omaha Mavericks (3-7-1, 0-1-0) on Thursday (Oct. 3) afternoon.Â
"Our girls were very excited to get Summit League play started today and our performance certainly showed that," assistant coach Josee Primeau said. "We were buzzing all over the field and on the sidelines. They fought hard for that result after missing a few good chances so early in the game but managed to hold on until the end."
The only goal needed for the Western Illinois women's soccer team (5-5-1, 1-0-0) came late in the first half. After Lundgren made a move in the box, she was taken down for a penalty kick. The junior responded and converted successfully, placing the ball in the bottom left corner of the net as the Omaha goalkeeper dove to the right for her second goal of the season in the 38th minute. Â
For senior goalkeeper Ines Palmiero Herrera, this season, she has seen her name move up in the record book, and today was no different. The five wins between the pipes tie her for seventh all-time in a season. She also stopped all five chances, including two UNO shots late in the second half, to earn back-to-back shutouts.Â
The Purple and Gold have now won three straight matches in a row with an undefeated mark (2-0) at the Northwest Field. The fifth victory on the 2019 season tied for ninth all-time in program history and moves the team .500.Â
Both Amy Andrews and Zoe Clarke nearly added two more tallies on the board for WIU. Each sent a shot that dinged off the crossbar in the first half.Â
WIU looks to keep the momentum on Sunday (Oct. 6) as they host Purdue Fort Wayne for a 1 p.m. kick-off.Â
