Close Third Set Falls Short in Denver

Mackenzie Steckler leading the way for close third set was not enough to combat the Pioneer victory.

DENVER, COLO. - After a close third set battle, Western Illinois volleyball fell to the Denver Pioneers Sunday (Oct. 20) (25-14, 25-14, 28-26)

WIU started the match with a block from Mariah Mitchell and Mackenzie Steckler followed by a Pioneer run to take an early lead. Steckler capped off a Leatherneck push with a kill to tie the set at 13-13. The Pioneers were able to go on a 12-1 run directly following and took the second set.

Starting the second set with another point from Steckler, the Pioneers were off to another large hole. Despite strong efforts from Mitchell and Steckler, the Pioneers took the second set with the same score.

The Leathernecks were able to tie the score up early in the third set with a kill from Mitchell followed by the first lead of the set with an ace from Steckler. The Leathernecks held the lead for the remainder of the set with Denver hanging on close behind. The Leathernecks were able to reach set point three times due to the offensive efforts of JoJo Kruize. After back-to-back timeouts from both teams, Western was unable to capitalize and Denver took the match.

Steckler led the team with a .412 hitting percentage with eight kills, one ace, and four blocks. Kruize stepped in on the offensive efforts with 13 kills as Mitchell notched three blocks and five kills.

Western will head home after today's match to kick off a home streak in Western Hall starting with a game on Tuesday (Oct. 22) night against Purdue Fort Wayne at 6 p.m. followed by three more home matches.
