Strong Second Set Performance Falls Short

Western Illinois falls to Omaha in Western Hall

MACOMB, ILL. – Western Illinois volleyball hosted their first home game in over a month as they tangoed with the Omaha Mavericks on Friday (Oct. 11) putting on a strong second set performance but ultimately falling in three (14-25, 23-25, 18-25).

"It was great being back in Western Hall in front of our fans but we made too many mistakes to compete with Omaha," said head coach Ben Staupe. "Our offense picked it up in set two but ultimately, we did not execute enough to take that set either."

Leathernecks started down in the first as they looked to their block to pick up points. With a couple of Omaha runs at both ends of the set WIU struggled to find their footing, dropping set one.

WIU put on a strong second set performances straight from the gates with a kill from Mackenzie Steckler. Omaha worked to gain the lead, combated by Mariah Mitchell with two kills to keep Western within two. As the Mavericks started on yet another run the WIU block stepped in for the stop. Slowly chipping away at the five-point lead Western put themselves within two at the end of set two but were too late, the Mavericks up 2-0.

Jessie Connell with an early service ace in the third to tie the game,  followed by three consecutive assists to keep the Leathernecks in the game. Taking off at 16-13 the Mavericks on a 6-2 run cemented their win over WIU.

At the front of the Leatherneck efforts was JoJo Kruize with 9 kills with  Mitchell closely trailing with 8. WIU with eight team blocks, led by Steckler with five and Madeline Dieter with four.

The Leathernecks will return to their home floor again Sunday (Oct. 13) as they take on the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in their second Summit League contest of 2019 in Western Hall.
