Volleyball Sweeps Oral Roberts for the First Time in Program History

Western Illinois volleyball defeated Oral Roberts for the first time since 2007

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois volleyball swept Oral Roberts in Western Hall on Sunday (Oct. 13). This is the first time that Western Illinois has won against Oral Roberts since the 2007 season and the first time in program history that WIU was able to sweep the Golden Eagles.

"To finish any league win with a sweep is amazing," said head coach Ben Staupe. " Anytime you have four players hitting over .300 you know your offense is clicking. Overall, we executed both offensively and defensively feeding of the phenomenal energy in the gym."

Western executed from the start when Mariah Mitchell and Mackenzie Steckler teamed up for a block. Western grabbed a 4-0 lead after a Jessie Connell ace. Two kills from JoJo Kruize extended the advantage to 13-8 and forced an Oral Roberts timeout. The Leathernecks kept the pressure on for the remainder of the set and finalized the first game with another kill from Kruize.

The Leathernecks jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the second set highlighted by another Steckler and Mitchell block. Oral Roberts was unable to find their footing and the Leathernecks extended their lead to 10 (16-6) with an ace from Elle Shult. WIU kept the foot on the gas pedal for the remainder of set two keeping the Golden Eagles at 13 as they ended the second set in the same way they did the first with a Kruize kill.

Oral Roberts felt the pressure of a 2-0 deficit and came out to a strong five-point lead in the third set. Steckler helped WIU take its first lead of the set at 10-9. The scoreboard continued to teeter for the remainder of the set until 21-20 when another kill from Steckler secured the lead one final time. Despite the Golden Eagles hitting at .307 in the third set, the Leathernecks were still able to capture the sweep.

Western outplayed Oral Roberts in almost every category with 42 kills, 39 digs, and five aces. The Leathernecks had four players that executed extremely well on offense including; Madeline Dieter, Kruize, Steckler and Mitchell all hitting above .300. Dieter led the pack with a .500 hitting percentage and Kruize had 12 kills.

Western Illinois will head on the road again to take on South Dakota and Denver Friday (Oct. 18) and Sunday (Oct. 20) before returning home for two consecutive weekends.
