Track & Field Puts on Show in Show Me State

The Leathernecks left the Mizzou Intercollegiate with 21 ‘Top 5’ performances.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou Intercollegiate was called early due to impending snow in the area, but that didn't stop Western Illinois track and field from icing the competition Friday (Jan. 11).

The four-team field pit the Leathernecks against Missouri, Columbia (Mo.) and Avila, and Western's women finished second overall with 115.5 points, while the men placed third with 44. Combined, the program tabbed 21 'Top 5' performances, highlighted by Bo Brasseur and Justin Montalto's event wins.

"Today's meet was a good opportunity to find out where our athletes stand after the Christmas break," said head coach Diane Wholey. "I was pleased with several of our athlete's performances. I know many worked hard over the holidays to keep up their fitness levels while they were away from campus. We had a short week of training this week so I am pleased with how well our athletes competed today."

After a month-long hiatus for Winter Break, the Mizzou Intercollegiate marked the start of five consecutive meets for the Leathernecks. Field athletes were the first to compete inside the Hearnes Center and Brady Shows (weight throw), Gabe Cheeks (long jump), Michaela Busch (high jump), Amelia Peterson (triple jump) and Megan Reed (triple jump) each placed 'top 5' while also setting a new personal record.

Brasseur narrowly missed her PR in the long jump but leapt past her competition with a 5.54-meter effort (18' 2.25") in her third attempt. The next closest jump came in at 5.39.

Pacing the Leathernecks' running athletes, Montalto created the time to beat in the men's 400-meter (52.93). The decisive victory edged the next closest runner by nearly two seconds.

Western's 'Top 5' also saw runners Rachel Hilton (60-meter dash) and Sierra Long (400 meter) eclipse their previous collegiate bests.

"We are looking forward to having our distance athletes returning to competition next week at Indiana State and what they will bring back to the table for our team."

The Leathernecks will return to action Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Sycamore Team Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
