Western Illinois Downed In South Dakota

The Leathernecks are back on the court on Friday (Oct. 5) against NDSU.

VERMILLION, S.D. – The Western Illinois volleyball team fell 3-0 to South Dakota on Sunday (Sept. 30) to drop to 1-16 (0-4).

The Coyotes took advantage of the home crowd and took the early lead in the opening set 14-5 against the Leathernecks. South Dakota won 6-straight points in the middle of the game and rode the momentum to win 25-12. 

Western Illinois bounced back quickly in the following set and took a 4-1 advantage.  The Coyotes evened the score at eight before taking a 10-8 lead. After Madeline Dieter recorded a kill and the Coyotes committed an attacking error, the teams found themselves knotted at 10 points apiece. A 9-3 run from South Dakota in the middle of the set aided a 25-17 Coyote victory in the second set.

In the final set of the match, the Leathernecks and Coyotes went back-and-forth to being the game. After being tied at 3-3, the Coyotes went on an 8-4 run to force a Leatherneck timeout after South Dakota went up 12-7. The Coyotes took the set and the match after winning the final frame, 25-16.

Emma Norris led the Leathernecks with six kills, while Jaime Johnson recorded a team-high 18 assists.

Western Illinois is back on the court at home against North Dakota State on Oct. 5. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside Western Hall.
