Freshmen Pitchers Guide Leathernecks to 8-2 Victory

The Cougars were battling a no-hitter through 6.2 innings of play with freshmen pitchers Jack Carberry and Jace Warkentien on the mound.

MACOMB, Ill. - Taking three of its last four matchups, Western Illinois baseball stacked another ballgame in the winning column Wednesday with an 8-2 victory over SIUE.

The success marks a season sweep over the in-state foe and comes on the back of the Leathernecks' second series win over North Dakota State.

Western was on the brink of recording its second shutout in as many games when Jordan Ross drilled a two-out, 2-2 pitch in the ninth inning to score two. The Cougars were battling a no-hitter through 6.2 innings of play with freshmen pitchers Jack Carberry and Jace Warkentien on the mound.

Carberry earned his first career win in 3.1 innings and was joined in the box score by Warkentien, Sam Cottingham-Beard, J.T. Baksha, Justin Foy, Ben Sellers and Austin Emanuel. The Leatherneck pitching staff collectively struck out 10 Cougars while walking seven.

Western tallied 11 hits against SIUE and was led by perfect appearances from Bailey Montgomery (2-for-2), Alex Dorethy (2-for-2) and Drue Galassi (3-for-3).

Montgomery scored a team-high three runs while Galassi added a team-high three RBIs.

"It feels good. We're just keeping a short mindset and just flushing out everything that doesn't go our way. We're keeping a short stroke, trying to get guys on base, and we're just playing really well right now.

"It's nice having our young guys come in and get some innings like Jack. He came in and started the game really well. It's really good when all around we just work together and play good baseball."

The Leathernecks scored in four of the first five innings which included a four-run effort in the third. Staring at loaded bases, Steve McShane was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run before Galassi's two-RBI single and Dillon Sears' RBI fielder's choice capped the inning.

In the decision, head coach Ryan Brownlee is just one win away from 100 in his career.

Western will trek to Tulsa, Okla., Friday for start of a three-game series at Oral Roberts.
