Six-Straight Hits Help Leathernecks to Victory

The effort led to five runs, the most tallied in a single inning this season, which helped the Leathernecks to a 7-2 victory over North Dakota State.

OMAHA, Neb. - Hitting is contagious, and the Western Illinois baseball team displayed just how true that is with six straight hits in one inning of play on Friday (April 20). The effort led to five runs, the most tallied in a single inning this season, which helped the Leathernecks to a 7-2 victory over North Dakota State.

"That was a big outing from Dunner [Ryan Dunne]. He did a great job of making pitches when he needed to and he kept the momentum in our dugout after we put up a big inning," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "Extra-base hits are fun. It was nice to get production from the bottom of the order with Steve [McShane] and Dillon [Sears].

"NDSU always battles and we have to match what they do pitching and on defense. They are not going to give you anything."

The third-inning stretch began and ended with Western freshmen, as Dillon Sears led things off with his first career triple and Alex Dorethy crowned action with his first career home run. The two-RBI blast to left field put the visitors ahead, 5-0, and the unanswered advantage stuck through the next four innings.

Back-to-back singles allowed the Bison to score two in the seventh, only one was earned, but the scores were quickly erased as the Leathernecks posted a run in each of the final two innings.

Dunne earned his second win of the year behind six hits and eight strikeouts in seven innings of action.

Western looked to its closer Colan Borchers for the final six outs of the game and he delivered. With a pair of Bison runners standing at second and third base, he concluded the game with a ground out to shortstop Johnathan Fleek.

Western's third-inning rally included back-to-back triples from Sears and Steve McShane, singles by Deion Thompson, Drue Galassi, and Bailey Montgomery and Dorethy's home run.

The Leathernecks will resume the series against NDSU Saturday at 1 p.m.
