Drake’s Career Day Not Enough vs. NDSU

He pitched a season-high seven innings with a career-high nine strikeouts, but the Leathernecks dropped the decision, 3-1.

OMAHA, Neb. - Switching up its weekend rotation, the Western Illinois baseball team called on Javin Drake to start game two against North Dakota State Saturday. He was quite effective on the mound with a season-high seven innings and a career-high nine strikeouts, but the Leathernecks dropped the decision, 3-1.

Mitch Ellis ended the Bison shutout with a solo home run in the ninth inning.

With the exception of a two-out home run in the opening inning, things were clear coasting for Drake. The sophomore righty gave up just two hits through six innings, retiring eight straight at one point, seven on strikeouts and six in consecutive fashion.

The Bison broke up the stretch after a hit-by-pitch and extended their lead to 3-0 with a single through the right side.

For the Leathernecks, there were a few opportunities to plate scores with seven were left on-base. Alex Dorethy led off the fourth inning with a single through the right side and concluded the frame standing at third base, and CJ Schaeffer was left stranded after a leadoff double in the seventh.

Both starting pitchers finished the day with a career-high nine strikeouts.

The rubber match between Western and NDSU will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, as Western defeated the Bison, 7-2, in the series opener.
