Koch Throws a One-Hitter; Leathernecks Pick Up Another Series Win

Ian Koch tossed a career-high 10 strikeouts with one hit in the 4-0 victory against North Dakota State.

OMAHA, Neb. - Directing the team to another series win over North Dakota State, Western Illinois' pitching rotation commanded action in all three games against its Summit League foe.

Ryan Dunne received the starting nod in game one's 7-2 victory, Javin Drake had a career day in game two's 3-1 setback, and Ian Koch tossed a one-hitter in Sunday's 4-0 shutout success.

The Leathernecks homered four times against NDSU, twice in the third inning of Sunday's finale, and Koch crowned the set with a career-high 10 strikeouts in eight innings of play.

Batting leadoff in the second inning, CJ Schaeffer sent his first career home run over the left field wall and watched Deion Thompson send a two-run shot to the opposite side just three at-bats later.

"It felt great. I was just trying to get a pitch I could do damage on, and I got it. You never want to miss your pitch," said Schaeffer.

"Koch was great. After last week, it was great to see him bounce back to his normal stuff. It's always easy calling a game behind the plate when your pitcher has everything working like all of our pitchers did this weekend."

Alex Dorethy flied out to center field to add an insurance run in the fifth, while Koch continued to dazzle on the mound. He retired nine straight Bison between the second and fifth innings, and then went on to record another nine consecutive outs after the miscue. The stretch was interrupted when a batter reached on an error.

Pete Minella closed the game in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning of his own.

Koch's strikeout tally tied Dunne for the most recorded by a Leatherneck this season and also helped him secure his third win of the year.

Western concluded its regular-season meetings against NDSU with two series wins.

Finishing off the home and away set against SIUE, the Cougars will head to Alfred D. Boyer Stadium Wednesday for a 4 p.m. ballgame. Mitch Ellis secured a 4-3 win at SIUE on April 11 with an RBI-double in the 10th inning.
