Western Unable to Turn Corner against UNO

One run separated Western from Omaha in the bottom of the sixth, but three UNO runs in the next inning allowed the visitors to separate for good.

MACOMB, Ill. - At the conclusion of the sixth inning, one run separated the Western Illinois and Omaha baseball teams, before a seventh-inning rally allowed the visiting Mavericks to take game one of the series, 8-5.

The Leathernecks trailed, 5-1, heading into the bottom of the fourth. CJ Schaeffer's RBI-single to center field catalyzed Western's offense to four unanswered runs, highlighted by a pair scored in the fifth, but three UNO runs in the seventh proved to be the difference.

Bailey Montgomery finished the day with a team-high two RBIs. He tied the game at 1-1 in the first inning with an RBI-ground out before singling through the left side to bring in the 5-4 score.

The Leathernecks' defense turned a season-high three double plays in the ballgame, two of which were inning-ending rallies, to keep things close.
Ian Koch was credited with the no-decision in 3.0 innings of play and Sam Cottingham-Beard received the loss.

Western continues its series against Omaha Saturday at 1 p.m., and the game will also mark the return of several Leatherneck greats.

The Leathernecks' winningest coach in program history Dick Pawlow will be joined by former players whose time in purple and gold spans seven different decades. A pre-game ceremony to honor the alums is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
