Western Drops Midweek Tilt at Bradley

Western scored both of its runs in the first inning.

PEORIA, Ill. - Western Illinois baseball met Bradley for a midweek tilt Wednesday (April 18), and dropped the ballgame, 9-2.

Right-handed pitcher Javin Drake opened things with a pair of strikes on each of the first four Braves he faced, but the at-bats resulted in loaded bases and a run scored. By the end of the inning, the Braves held a 3-2 advantage.

Patience at the plate (three walks) and a few Bradley miscues helped Western score two in the opening frame, and the visitors were kept off the base paths until Mitch Ellis drew a leadoff walk in the fourth.

The Braves extended their lead to 6-2 in the fifth with a two-out, two-RBI home run, but caught some heat in the next inning as Western loaded the bases for the second time. Unfortunately for the Leathernecks, none scored, and Bradley returned the favor in the bottom of the frame, plating one.

Alex Dorethy recorded Western's lone RBI, and defensively, catcher CJ Schaeffer caught two runners stealing. He currently leads The Summit League in the category with 10 on the season.

Western also captured success in Austin Emanuel's second-ever appearance on the mound. The sophomore righty retired the side in order to conclude the seventh, and the performance marked the first three-up, three-down inning for a Leatherneck pitcher on the day.

Beginning the second half of league play, Western will take on North Dakota State in a three-game set. The games will be held on the campus of Omaha at 1 p.m., and the first is scheduled for Friday.
