Home Run Breaks Evenly Matched Ballgame

Western and Illinois State swapped leads through the sixth inning where a three-run homer proved to be the difference.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois baseball welcomed Illinois State to Alfred B. Boyer Stadium Tuesday (March 27) where, with the exception of a three-run homer in the top of the sixth, the game was evenly matched.

Western held a 4-3 edge through four innings before the Redbirds regained their lead in the fifth and extended it in the sixth for a final score of 8-4.

The visitors' home run was the first recorded in Alfred D. Boyer this season.

Loading the bases in the third frame, Illinois State plated three with an RBI-single, sacrifice fly and fielder's choice. The deficit was quickly cut to one, 3-2, in the home half of the inning where Steve McShane tabbed his third career triple and scored Caleb Jacobs.

Drue Galassi brought home McShane with an RBI-single to right field, and the Leathernecks added two additional runs in the next frame on a throwing error and an RBI-sacrifice bunt by Bailey Montgomery.

Galassi finished the day with two of Western's eight hits, while J.T. Baksha and Jimmy Perkins delivered stellar relief appearances with 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball.

"I think this was the first game where Drue looked like himself, and we need him to get going, so it was nice for him to make some adjustments," said head coach Ryan Brownlee.

"With two games in the middle of the week, our main guys are going to throw but we're also trying to mix other guys in. We're trying to decide the last couple of spots for this weekend. There are three phases in the game with pitching, defense and offense, and we've shown flashes of it but we have to get things going offensively. You make it easy on an opponent when you swing and miss 10 to 12 times a game. It's not an easy thing to hit, but we're working on it. We just have to take it into the game setting. We have two good opponents this week that'll get us ready for the weekend [against Fort Wayne]."

The Leathernecks will wrap their home stand Wednesday with a 3 p.m. matchup against Missouri.
