Western’s Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short

Both teams left 12 runners on base, and for Western, three of those were recorded in the final inning.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. –  The Western Illinois and Fort Wayne baseball teams combined for 21 hits in their series opener Friday, where the final score favored the Mastodons in a 3-1 decision.

Western recorded 10 hits, its second most in Summit League play this season, with three captured as doubles.

One-run innings helped the Mastodons to an unanswered lead (3-0) through six frames. The home side plated its first run on a fielder's choice in the third, and the next two runs were scored with the bases loaded - an RBI-single to center field in the fifth and a walk in the sixth.

Western's first opportunity to strike occurred in the fourth inning where Bailey Montgomery and Steve McShane recorded back-to-back singles. Johnathan Fleek put the two in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but neither scored.

Ian Koch was charged with all three Mastodon runs in six innings of action, and Jordan Mikel took the mound to start the seventh. He pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.

Both teams left 12 runners on base, and for Western, three of those were stranded in the final inning.

The Leathernecks opened the frame with three straight hits, beginning with CJ Schaeffer's leadoff single and ending with Alex Dorethy's pinch-hitting RBI-double. There was just one out on the board when Fort Wayne intentionally walked Drue Galassi to load the bases, but things ended with a fly out and ground out.

Western's 6-3 setback against South Dakota State (March 23) also concluded with a ninth-inning bases loaded rally.

The series against Fort Wayne continues Saturday at 10 a.m.
