Busch Highlights Western’s First Outdoor Meet of 2018 Season

Michaela Busch set a pair of personal records and added an all-time mark.

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Weeks after seeing her name highlighted as a Summit League Preseason Athlete to Watch, Michaela Busch displayed why she was an easy choice Saturday (March 24) with high marks at Southern Illinois'' Bill Cornell Spring Classic.

The meet marked Western Illinois track and field's first outdoor event of the 2018 season, and included seven personal records as well as a Leatherneck all-time mark.

Busch competed in three individual events on the day and paced Western in each one. She set the distance to beat in the high jump, and not only won the event with a mark of 1.65 meters (5'5") but also etched her name in Western's record book with a tie for ninth place all-time.

She set personal records in the javelin (31.04 meters / 101'10.25") and 100-meter hurdles (15.53).

"The weather was less than ideal, cold, wet, breezy at times, and we had a bit of a hard time managing through it in some events. There were some shining moments though," said assistant coach Nick Maas. "Nicole Beebe, Abigail Richter, Michaela Busch, Victoria Adesola, and Jace Norman all set personal bests, and Nick Olson threw very well in the javelin.

"The goal of the first meet of the year is to get outside and bust off the rust after a break between seasons. How a team will react to the elements are always an unknown. We definitely need to work in that area. However, the team and coaches are eager to get better in week two."

Western also tabbed Amelia Peterson for three events. She led the Leatherneck contingent in both the long jump (4.98 meters / 16'4.25") and triple jump (11.18 meters / 36'8.25") events, highlighted by a 10th place finish in the former. She clocked a time of 13.12 in the 100-meter dash.

The women's team captured additional PRs in Victoria Adesola's triple jump (10.56 meters / 34'7.75"), Abigail Richter's 1,500 (4:57.02) and Nicole Beebe's 5,000-meter run (18:09.71).

Twenty-two student-athletes completed the field in the 5,000-meter run, where Beebe placed seventh and Richter 10th (18:19.20). The Leathernecks also bested the field in the 200-meter dash as Raytoria Richardson recorded an eighth-place finish in 26.29 while Jamieria Stennis finished her 400-meter race with a ninth-place effort of 1:00.98.

Nick Olson captured the best finish of the day for the Leatherneck men with a second-place javelin throw (46.19 meters /151'6.75"). Both Josh Kirby and Josh Thomas took on the 110-meter hurdles, and out of a field of 18, the two placed fifth (15.16) and seventh (15.27), respectively.

Rounding out PRs, Darius Patterson (22.68) and Jace Norman (22.77) set theirs in the 200-meter dash.

Western will continue its outdoor season on the campus of Southeast Missouri next weekend (March 30-31). The two-day Joey Haines Invite begins Friday at 9 a.m.
