Dunne Pitches a Gem at Indiana State

Ryan Dunne retired 16 straight for a perfect game through the sixth inning.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – In his previous start, Ryan Dunne fired up the Western Illinois baseball team with 11 straight outs, and on Sunday (March 11), he showed the flames were still kindling. The senior righty pitched a complete game -- a perfect outing until the sixth inning – in the Leathernecks' 2-0 setback at Indiana State.

Keeping the bases clear, he retired 16 Sycamore hitters before his bid for a perfect game concluded with a single to center field.

"You're really not going to see a better pitched game than that," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "I'm just really proud of him. I thought we were going to get a no-hitter out of that. Everything went down for him today; even when he got into trouble, he found a way to get out of it.

"He's going to be really, really good going forward. All he has to do is keep maintaining that, and not get frustrated that we haven't given him any run support. He's a great teammate, and has been around the game for a long time and that's how he goes about his business."

Western's defense battled just as hard to support Dunne. Dave Dobrinich covered a lot of ground in left field to snag the first out of the game, and Steve McShane flipped over the right field wall for a ball in foul territory. He was unable to make the grab, but Dunne rewarded the effort with a strikeout.

The Leathernecks outhit Indiana State, 5-2, through the eighth inning, until a pair of outfield singles allowed two to score.

Western finished the game with seven total hits, with two recorded in the final stanza. Justin Fitzpatrick led off the inning with a single to right center, and CJ Schaeffer sent a shot through the left side.

The Leathernecks were down to their last out when Bailey Montgomery stepped up to the plate, and with a full count against him, he fouled off three straight pitches before drawing a walk. Western, unfortunately, concluded the game with all three left on base.

"We're all in this together. We're all Leatherneck baseball. It's just a matter of treating every pitch the same and not making it any bigger," continued Brownlee. "They all have the capability of getting on. We barreled some balls, and hit a lot of balls hard, but you just have to keep banging away at it."

Dunne became the first Leatherneck to pitch a complete game this season, and tied for a season-low in runs allowed.

The Leathernecks conclude their series against Indiana State Monday at 12 p.m.
