Western Drops Big Ten Meeting at No. 14 Indiana

In its final tune-up before conference play, Western took on No. 14 Indiana.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Western Illinois baseball team took on Big Ten competition in No. 14 Indiana on Wednesday (March 14), and dropped the decision, 11-1.

The Hoosiers' entire lineup made an appearance in the first inning where four runs were scored. The home side loaded the bases twice in the frame, plating runs on a sacrifice fly, walk, hit by pitch and passed ball.

The Leathernecks looked to Jordan Mikel to record the final out of the inning, and he went 3-for-3 against Indiana, not allowing a baserunner until a two-out single in the second inning.

Pitchers Jace Warkentien, J.T. Baksha and Colan Borchers joined Mikel in throwing scoreless innings, while freshman Justin Foy made his collegiate debut in the sixth frame and recorded a game-high three strikeouts.

In the seventh, Johnathan Fleek rounded the bags for a leadoff triple, and he scored on the next at-bat on a single by Drue Galassi. Galassi advanced to third base with a pair of passed balls and remained there to conclude the inning.

With multi-hit performances, Fleek and Steve McShane notched their third and fourth of the season, respectively, highlighted by a pair of doubles and a single by McShane.

Western begins play in The Summit League Friday when it plays host North Dakota State. Game one of the three-game series is set to begin at 3 p.m.
