Momentum Favors Leathernecks Late; Comeback Falls Short

Alex Dorethy didn’t allow a baserunner in the final three innings.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –  On the verge of completing a comeback against Indiana State on Saturday, Western Illinois baseball saw just about everything it needed from its players, but fell short by a score of 5-4.

Western outhit the Sycamores, 13-8, highlighted by five Leathernecks with multi-hit performances. Pitching in relief, Alex Dorethy didn't allow a baserunner in the final three innings.

The Sycamores scored runs in three of the first four frames, while Western struck the scoreboard every other inning, starting in the third. Dillon Sears reached first base with an infield single at the top of the ninth, but was left stranded to conclude the day.

Dorethy entered the game in the bottom of the sixth, and needed just 10 pitches to sit the side down in order. His first batter lined out to center field, before six straight strikes fanned one swinging and another looking.

Dorethy continued to deal through the eighth inning, retiring nine consecutive batters to finish the game with four strikeouts in 3.0 innings.

"I was really just focused on staying in the game," said Dorethy. "I wanted to throw strikes and get that first pitch across for a strike every time. When I got up there, I looked at every batter and thought, 'I'm going to beat you.'"

As the team leader in RBIs, it was a no-brainer for Deion Thompson to bring home a run. In the bottom of the seventh, the junior captured his ninth RBI of the season with a single to left field. Johnathan Fleek followed suit with his second of the day on a ground out to the short stop, and by the end of the frame, Western had closed its deficit to one run, 5-4.

Justin Fitzpatrick was a late addition to the starting lineup but led the Leathernecks with three hits. Steve McShane, Sears, Thompson, and Dave Dobrinich added two.

Ian Koch (0-4) received the loss with 5.0 innings, eight hits, and five runs.

Western continues its series at Indiana State Sunday at 12 p.m. Watch the action live on ESPN3.
