Western Illinois plays host to South Dakota before traveling to Northern Iowa.

MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois women's soccer takes on South Dakota at home in the Kick For The Cure Game on Sunday, Oct. 7 before wrapping up non-league play at Northern Iowa on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT:
The Western Illinois women's soccer team (2-9-1) suffered a 5-0 setback to North Dakota (8-2-1) on Tuesday, Oct. 4 as the Leathernecks fell to 0-3 in Summit League play. All North Dakota women's soccer home games this season switched venues to East Grand Forks Senior High School due to renovations at Bronson Field on campus.

The Leathernecks came out firing, Zoe Clarke's first shot was saved by the North Dakota goalkeeper in the eighth minute. Only two minutes later, Lauryn Peters rifled a shot on goal and it was corralled again. In the 29th minute, a shot by North Dakota's Olivia Knox rebounded to Mimi Eiden to knock it into the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead.

Brittany Mueller took the ball into the box and launched a shot into the corner of the net during the 48th minute as the North Dakota advantage doubled to 2-0. In the 68th minute, Veronica Kessler and Cassie Giddings teamed up for the assist to Olivia Knox to extend the Fighting Hawk lead to 3-0. Giddings put the ball into the back of the net on an individual effort during the 77th minute to put North Dakota ahead 4-0. Emma Bangert delivered the final goal of the match in the 81st minute.

SCOUTING THE COYOTES:
South Dakota is currently 6-4-2 overall and 1-1 in Summit League play after a 3-1 win at Oral Roberts on Thursday, Oct. 4. The Coyotes edged the Leathernecks 1-0 in Vermillion last season.

Michael Thomas is in his first season as the head coach of the Coyotes after four seasons as the associate head coach at Cal State Fullerton. Thomas was in charge of the Buffalo women's soccer program from 2008-2014. Junior forward Taryn LaBree leads the team with four goals and fellow junior forward Kellee Willer paces the Coyotes with five assists.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS:
Northern Iowa is 5-5-2 entering the weekend, but they are off to a 0-2 start in the Missouri Valley Conference. The last time these two teams met in the regular season was Sept. 18, 2016 and the Panthers won 3-0. Northern Iowa edged the Leathernecks 1-0 in a preseason exhibition game in Macomb last season.

Bruce Erickson enters his second season as the head coach of the Northern Iowa women's soccer program. Senior midfielder Kelsey Yarrow and junior forward Sydney Hayden each have three goals this season. The match will be played at the TBK Bank Sports Complex in Bettendorf, Iowa.

PRIMEAU'S PREGAME QUOTE:
Sunday's game against South Dakota is massive for us," assistant coach Josee Primeau said. "It's the biggest game of the year to be frank. We cannot afford to drop any more Summit League games and getting a win at home would be huge. We've been held scoreless in our last three matches so getting back on the score sheet is crucial for the girls confidence moving forward. We can turn it around by putting together a solid 90 minute performance against South Dakota. Northern Iowa always has a good team so that will be a nice challenge for us on the road and serve as a tune up for our remaining Summit League contests.

LOOKING AHEAD:
Following the trip to the Quad Cities, the Leathernecks head to Oral Roberts for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Oct. 14.
