MEET RESULTS

INDIANAPOLIS –
Erica Hagen and Brennan Bladel each won individual events in Saturday's (Oct. 20) dual meet against IUPUI, Butler and Olivet Nazarene in Indianapolis.

"We swam well as a whole," said Western Illinois head coach Greg Naumann. "I'm very surprised at how well the team did compared to last week since they had a much harder week of training coming into today's meet. We had some great races throughout the meet with many of them not landing in our favor, but they pulled out the best in our team."

Bladel earned his victory in the 100-back by .14 in the 100-back and Hagen swam to her triumph in the 100-breast by just .20. Bladel later came in third in the 200-IM (1:56.91).

The Leathernecks also collected a pair of second-place performances. Miranda Mathus netted second in the 200-free (1:56.16) before touching third in the 100-fly (59.98). In his first competition of the season, senior Chance McQuigg registered a second-place finish in the 100-breast (58.49).

On the Western Illinois women's side, Casey Roberts logged third in the 100-free (53.55). Newcomers Alexis Dreyer (2:17.77) and Laramie Reed (2:31.17) did the same in the 200-back and 200-breast, respectively. Reed also raced for third in the 200-IM (2:14.12).

Freshman Adam Peterson sprinted for third in the 50-free (21.61) before Phillip Kudela touched third in the 100-free with a time of 47.74. Nicholas Kontos record a third-place finish in the 200-back (2:00.50). Connor Owens swiped third in the 200-breast (2:16.34).

The Purple and Gold 200-medley relay team of Samir Almhiemid, McQuigg, Bladel and Peterson connected for second with a slot of 1:35.23. The women's 400-free relay squadron of Marissa Purdum, Roberts, Madeline Pittman and Mathus touched in 3:43.47 for third place.

"The upside in even some of our weaker swims on the day show signs that they are putting things together that we are working on in practice, or things that we need to change during the meet," Naumann said. "I was very impressed with how quickly the team was making changes. It's great to see that they are thinking about what they need for fix in their races.  This may make them a bit slower, but once this becomes a habit, then they'll be able to just race."

The Western Illinois women next compete at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 in a dual meet against Omaha. The Leatherneck men will not see competition until Nov. 16-18 at the House of Champions in Indianapolis.
