Volleyball Falls in Heartbreaker At SDSU

The Leathernecks lost 3-2 in Brookings, S.D.

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Western Illinois volleyball fell in a 3-2 heartbreaker at South Dakota State on Friday night in Brookings, S.D. (Oct. 12).

The Leathernecks took the first set against the Jackrabbits, which was just the second time this season Western Illinois won the first set in a true road game. The Leathernecks jumped out to a quick 8-5 start and never trailed in the set. Up 15-14, the Purple and Gold extended their Leathernecks to 19-14 after four-straight points headlined by kills from Melanie Patenaude and Madeline Dieter. Emma Norris ended the set with a serve that Makenzie Hennen mishandled.

South Dakota State rebounded and took the second set, 25-14. Western Illinois took the first two points of the third set and continued to lead deep into the set, 16-12. The Jacks rallied and rattled off the next five points and took a 17-16 advantage. SDSU won the last three of four points to take the third set, 25-21.

Western Illinois captured the momentum in the fourth set and took the frame into extra points and came out on top, 27-25. Down 9-7, the Jacks scored five-straight points to force a Leatherneck timeout, but the Purple and Gold quickly rebounded to tie the game at 18 points apiece. WIU used its second timeout of the set down 24-23, and it worked, as the Leathernecks tied the match at 24 and scored the last two to win and to force a fifth set.

In the decisive fifth, the Leathernecks jumped out on top 3-1 after two attacking errors from the Jacks and a kill from Mariah Mitchell. After kills from Dieter and Norris, the Leathernecks found themselves up 7-4 in the final frame. The Jackrabbits hopped out to a 13-11 lead in the later part of the set, but the Purple and Gold won three-straight points to take the 14-13 lead. South Dakota State ended the match on a 3-0 run and took the set and the match.

Norris led the Leathernecks with 11 kills, while Sanders ended with nine and Dieter collected eight.  Johnson assisted 36 kills while Claire Grove led the team with 18 digs. Western Illinois is back on the court on Sunday (Oct. 14) at 2 p.m.
