Leathernecks go 1-1 In First Day In Birmingham

Western beats Charleston Southern but falls to Austin Peay

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- In the first day of the UAB Blazer Invitational, Western (3-2) captured a victory against Charleston Southern (0-7)  3-2 (25-15, 17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-8) in its first match of the morning. The Leathernecks fell to Austin Peay (6-1) in their second match of the day, (25-12, 25-15, 25-17).

GAME ONE:

Shalyn Greenhaw and Shiah Sanders each recorded a double-double with Greenhaw recording 12 kills and 14 digs and Sanders logging 12 kills and 14 digs. Mackenzie Steckler also recorded 12 kills.

"We did a good job this morning sticking with it, and getting the win. It was not our cleanest match, but even when that is happening it is important to find a way to get the win and they did that," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "It was good to see their fight and ability to finish a hard fought match."

In set one, the Leathernecks jumped out early and continued to ride the momentum the entire set.  Sanders recorded two kills early to set the tone of and was aided by kills from Steckler and Emilee Dechant. The Buccaneers struggled to find anything and the Leathernecks finished the set winning 25-15.

The Buccaneers rebounded in the second set and jumped out to a 7-1 lead. Kills by Emma Norris, Greenhaw and Dechant brought the set to 14-10, but the Leathernecks were unable to fully recover, falling 16-25.

The third set went the Leathernecks way, as they were able to find halt a Buccaneer run in the middle of the set. After giving up five straight points, Western rebounded and won the next seven of nine points to take the lead 18-17. The Purple and Gold won the last four points of the set, headlined by a kill from Sanders to seal the set, 25-21.

In the fourth set, the Leathernecks were able to establish an 18-12 lead but were unable to finish the set, giving up seven out of the last eight points to Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers won the fourth set 25-22.

The Leathernecks dominated the fifth set of the match, causing the Buccaneers to call a timeout after the first four points, all won by the Leathernecks. The Buccaneers were never able to come within two in the final set to 15, and the Leathernecks took the set, and the match, 15-8.

GAME TWO:

The Leathernecks were unable to carry the momentum from the first match—a match the ended less than two hours from when the second game started.

"We have to really make sure we're paying attention to details and mentally staying in a match from beginning to end. It's always hard when you've just finished a long five set match, and we need to do a better job responding physically and mentally in a back-to-back scenario," said Richardson. "We continue to see good things from this group. This afternoon was a good opportunity to identify some areas we need to improve on, and we'll come back tomorrow ready to apply those items."

In the first set, down 9-3, the Leathernecks rallied to come within three but could not keep up with the Governors, who won the set 25-17. In the second set, the Leathernecks found themselves down early and could not fully recover, eventually falling 25-17.

The third set , Western earned a quick 3-0 lead in part to a Steckler kill and two Govenors' attacking errors. Austin Peay went on an ensuing run, winning the next five points. The Purple and Gold kept the third set close, pulling within two at 13-15, but could not completely find its momentum.

Claire Grove recorded 12 digs in the match along with two assists. Steckler and Greenhaw each logged six kills in the match.

The Leathernecks look to finish 2-1 for the tournament, facing host UAB (Sept. 3) at noon.
