Leathernecks Drop Road Match To UAB

Shalyn Greenhaw logged a match-high 15 digs

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Western Illinois volleyball team (3-3) fell 3-0 (20-25, 26-28, 16-25) to UAB (3-4) on Sept. 3 in Birmingham, Alabama, in the final match of the UAB Blazer Invitational.

"Today we struggled with getting down early and had to work from behind a lot. We need to do a better job getting things started quicker, and building that momentum earlier in the set," said Head Coach Kelly Richardson. "We are still seeing some really great things though, and we really like this teams ability to fight. We look forward to hitting the court again tomorrow against SEMO."

The Leathernecks were down six points early in the first set, but were able to rally and pull within one point to make the score 12-11. The Purple and Gold put together four straight points highlighted by kills from Shiah Sanders and Shalyn Greenhaw. Down 17-13, Western staged another comeback and pieced together five straight points to take the lead, 18-17. The Blazers put together a run of their own to end the set, winning 25-20.

The second set proved to be the most interesting of the afternoon as it stayed within four points the entire time. The second set was back-and-forth and was highlighted by four Emma Norris kills. Greenhaw logged a set-high seven digs and Jaime Johnson recorded eight assists. The Blazers edged the Leathernecks after recording kills by Haley Jared and Victoria Young and won the set 28-26.

In the third set, the Purple and Gold were down early and could not find traction against the Blazers. Down 24-11, the Leathernecks put together five straight points including two kills by Sanders and a kill each from Melanie Patenaude and Riley Schumacher. The Leathernecks eventually fell 25-16 in the set.

Western looks to bounce back against Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Mo. on Monday (Sept. 4). First serve is set for 4 p.m.
