Leathernecks Fall to Milwaukee in Road Test

Natalie Nagle records a team high two shots on goal

MILWAUKEE, Wis.- The Western Illinois women's soccer team fell on the road to Milwaukee 3-0 on Sept. 1. Natalie Nagle led the way for the Leathernecks as she recorded three shots, including two on goal. Emily Bollman also logged three shots in the match, but all were left wide.

"Milwaukee is a good side that is athletic and good in the air. We made mistakes on all three goals and cannot afford to do that against a good team," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We did, however, compete for all 90 minutes so I cannot fault our effort."

Western had a chance early in the 12th minute as Lauryn Peters took a shot from 17 yards out but was pushed wide. Madeline Edwards also had an opportunity, but the shot was wide. The first of Nagle's shots on goal was a potential equalizer that came in the 30th minute, just seconds after the Panther's first goal.

In the second half, Nagle recorded two more shots on the goal, both saved by the Panthers' Mallory Geurts. The Leathernecks were outshot 20-13 and 8-1 on corner kicks. Ines Palmiero Herrera recorded three saves in the match.

Milwaukee struck in the first minute as Kelli Swenson netted a second ball off of a header in the box in the 30th minute of the match. Ten minutes later, McKaela Schmelzer netted her first goal of the season off of a corner kick from Jen Eberhardy. The third goal of the match came from Aubrey Krahn as she got behind Western's back line and put it in the back of the net.

The Purple and Gold are back in action on Sept. 8 against University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. First kick is set for 4 p.m.
