Men’s Soccer Drops Road Match At Dayton

Western Illinois fell 4-1 in its third regular season match.

MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois dropped a 4-1 road contest to the Dayton Flyers on Friday (Sept. 1). The Leathernecks (0-3-0) held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks, but were outshot 19-7 in the match.

The Purple and Gold immediately fell into a deficit after Dayton was able to score just 44 seconds into the match. From there, Western was able to get some of its momentum back and tie the match up after Fernando Pacheco's shot was rebounded and Drew Whalen was there for the finish and his second goal of the season.

Dayton, however, was able to reclaim its lead 10 minutes later ('60) off a cross at the far post that resulted in a low finish that found the back of the net. The next goal came at the 75th minute, followed by the fourth and final goal of the match in the 82nd minute.

Western Illinois finished with a total of three shots on goal compared to Dayton's nine, and had five saves in the match. Drew Whalen led the way with five shots (two on goal) and his 50th minute goal, while Fernando Pacheco finished with two shots with one on goal.

"Obviously going down 1-0 in the first minute wasn't ideal, but I was proud of how the guys battled back from that," said assistant coach Tom Buckner. "We started the second half very well and deservedly got ourselves level, but their second goal was a real sucker punch for us. We didn't recover from it and opened ourselves up as we tried to push on for the equalizer. We will learn from it, take the positives where we can and look to get our first win of the season this Sunday in Cedar Rapids against Mount Mercy."

The Leathernecks return to action this Sunday (Sept. 3) for a road trip at Mount Mercy that is set for a 1 p.m. kick, followed by a Sept. 9 faceoff at Bowling Green. The sixth-straight road contest takes place Sept. 16 at Kansas City before the home opener Sept. 20 against Drake.
