Fernando Pacheco’s Goals Lift Western Over Mount Mercy

The Leathernecks gained a 2-1 win over the Mustangs.

MACOMB, Ill. — After trailing in the early-going of the match, a pair of goals by Fernando Pacheco gave the Western Illinois Leathernecks (1-3-0) a 2-1 victory over Mount Mercy (Sept. 3) for the first win of the season.

The Mustangs were able to get on the board early in the fourth minute off a goal by James Conversano. After shots by Drew Whalen and Armel Kouassi in the 27th and 34th minutes, Western was able to get on the board after Fernando Pacheco was able to net his second goal of the season for the equalizer and tie the score at 1-1.

Mount Mercy had a scoring chance at the end of the first half, but goalkeeper Tim Trilk was there for the save as the period ended. The Leathernecks defense was able to hold off the Mustangs' attack early in the second half, stopping back-to-back shots. Following a yellow card on Mount Mercy in the 77th minute, the game-winning goal came off the foot of Pacheco for his third of the season.

After Paul Kirdorf rocketed a shot that hit the crossbar, Fernando Pacheco was there to rebound it in the net and give Western a 2-1 lead in the 79th minute and not allow a goal for the remainder of the match.

Drew Whalen finished with a match-high five shots, while both of Pacheco's goals were the only shots he took in the match. Ben Fiddes finished with a pair of shots, while Armel Kouassi had a shot on goal. Tim Trilk totaled three saves in the match.

The Leathernecks will now shift their focus to Bowling Green for a Sept. 9 matchup on the road. The first kick is scheduled for 3 p.m.

"We were able to survive. After a poor start, we could have easily been down 3-0 but we were able to come back and win," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We will need a good week of training so that we are better prepared for Bowling Green on Saturday."
