Women's Soccer Falls In Overtime At SIU-Edwardsville

Western Illinois fell off a late goal despite a 9-6 shots on goal advantage.

MACOMB, Ill. — An early-overtime goal resulted in a 1-0 defeat for the Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer program at SIU-Edwardsville. The Purple and Gold fall to 0-3-0 overall, with the last two losses being decided by a single goal.

"We played much better as a team tonight," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We scored a goal that was called back and created some quality chances. The back line was organized and played very well. I thought Cristina From and Natalie Nagle had good games in the midfield and won quite a few second balls. It was a tough loss but we took a few steps forward as a team today."

The Leathernecks immediately came out on the attack, forcing three shots on goal that were saved by the Cougars. By the end of the first half, Western Illinois had a 2-1 advantage on corner kick opportunities. Western Illinois had back-to-back scoring opportunities in the 57th and 64th minute after Madeline Edwards recorded a header and Alexandra Siavleis had a shot on goal. Both of the shots were saved by the Cougar's keeper.  A minute later, Edwards saw another opportunity, but her shot on goal was once again saved.

After a scoreless match at the end of regulation, SIU-Edwardsville was able to get the game-winning goal off a short cross that met the forward and rolled across the line into the back of the net.

Madeline Edwards led the way with three shots (all on goal), while Lauryn Peters finished with a pair of shots on target. Emily Bollman, Bridget Schuler, Natalie Nagle and Alexandra Siavelis all finished with a shot on goal, while Ines Palmiero Herrera finished with a total of five saves.

As a team, Western was outshot 14-9 in the match, but all nine shots were on goal compared to SIUE's six.

The Leathernecks are back in action with a Sept. 1 road contest at Milwaukee. The match is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
