Brett Taylor Named to Athlon Sports Preseason All-America Team

The senior captain led the nation in solo tackles a season ago and was a 2016 All-American

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois linebacker Brett Taylor (Macomb/Macomb) was tabbed Preseason All-American by Athlon Sports on Wednesday (June 14). The 2017 WIU captain was one of three linebackers on Athlon's list.

As a junior, Taylor led the Leathernecks with 134 total tackles with 94 of them being solo. His 8.5 solo tackles per game led the nation and his 12.2 tackles per game ranked third in the country. His solo tackles per game was the 10th-best per game average in FCS season history.

Taylor, who graduated this past December with his bachelor's degree, recorded a career-high 18 tackles at Northern Iowa (11/12/16).

Following the 2016 season, Taylor earned several all-america honors on top of finishing seventh in the Buck Buchanan Award voting (National Defensive Player of the Year), First Team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference and First Team Academic All-MVFC.

All but four of the 27 players on the Athlon Sports FCS Preseason All-America team are seniors. Three of the exceptions are juniors. The talent in the FCS is widespread as 19 schools and 10 conferences make the All-America team, including three Missouri Valley Football Conference teams.
