Brown, Adams Take Home First-Place Finishes

The women and men finished fourth and fifth at the Redbird Invitational.

NORMAL, Ill. – Malachi Adams and Jasmine Brown both took home first-place finishes at the Redbird Invitational Saturday (April 8).

The women's team notched a fourth place finish, while the men finished fifth as a team.

"We saw some very windy conditions today which played out great for the sprint races, but caused some havoc for the other events," said head coach Mike Stevenson. "We have a handful of athletes who are excelling in their events, but we have a number of people who need to figure out what it takes to compete at high levels. We've had some injury and illness which have hit us, but we are looking forward to staying home and getting ready for next weekend."

On the men's side, Adams came away victorious in the men's 100 meter dash with a time of 14.79 seconds. He also finished fifth in the 200, running a time of 20.98.

For the men's javelin, Josh Swope recorded a distance of 178' 10 ¼ (54.51m) to finish second. Fellow teammates Tevin Taylor and Josh Kirby also notched second-place finishes in the men's triple jump and 110 meter hurdles. Taylor jumped a distance of 44' 11.1 (13.70m) and Kirby finished with a time of 14.79 seconds.

For the women, Brown recorded her second first-place finish of the outdoor season in the triple jump, with a distance  of 40' 10 ½ (12.46m). In the 800-meter run, Alyssa Johnson finished second with a time of 2:12.31. Freshman Allison Richter threw a total of 125' 2 ¾ in the women's javelin for a third place finish.

Western Illinois also had a pair of runners place in the top-10 for the women's 200 meter run. Kaliyah Cobb came in third with a time of 24.83, followed by Sierra Woods' sixth-place finish at 24.98.

The Leathernecks also finished second in the women's 4 x 400 meter run, as the team of Bo Brasseur, Kaliyah Cobb, Alyssa Johnson and Sierra Woods finished with a total time of 3:58.97.
