Track and Fields Holds 28th Annual Lee Calhoun Memorial Invitational

The Leathernecks compete April 13-15 at home.

MACOMB, Ill. -  Western Illinois track and field returns home to Hanson Field for the 28th Annual Lee Calhoun Memorial Invitational Track Meet, which will take place from Thursday (April 13) to Saturday (April 15).

"I think it's always awesome being a senior at your last home meet. It means a lot," said senior Madison Lefler. "It also a good time to reflect on all the memories you've made with your team. I am super excited to race Saturday, as well as watch everyone perform well."

WHAT'S UP: The meet kicks off with the Decathlon at 1 p.m. on Thursday, which begins with the 100, long jump, shot put, high jump and the 400 meters. The start of the Heptathlon follows at 1:15, consisting of the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 meters. The following day (April 14) at 9 a.m., the Decathlon and Heptathlon wraps up, and the hammer throw begins at 1 p.m. On Saturday, the final day of the invitational, field events begin at 9 a.m. and the running events begin at 11:30 a.m.

ABOUT THE MEET: The meet honors the legacy of former United States Olympian and Leatherneck track and field coach Lee Quency Calhoun. Lee Calhoun was known for being the first track and field athlete to win consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 110-meter high hurdles in the 1956 Melbourne Games and 1960 Games in Rome. Calhoun was a seven-time national champion and five-time world record holder in the indoor and outdoor NAAU, NAIA and NCAA Track and Field Championships. He won the NCAA meet with a record of 13.7 seconds and equaled world marks in 50, 60, and 70-yard high hurdle races. Calhoun was inducted into the inaugural class of the United States Track and Field Hall of Fame (1974), United States Olympic Hall of Fame (1991) and Western Illinois Athletic Hall of Fame (1990), posthumously.

LAST TIME OUT: The Western Illinois women's track and field team claimed the 2016 Lee Calhoun Memorial Invitational title, as the Leathernecks tallied 194.5 points en route to its first Lee Calhoun title since 2006. The men's side finished in fifth place with 77.5 points. On the day, five individuals and two relays earned event titles.
