Softball Topped by Detroit Mercy

Leathernecks fell to the Titans 5-1 on Sunday

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Western Illinois softball team wrapped up competition at the Total Control Sports Invitational on Sunday (Feb. 12) with a 5-1 loss to Detroit Mercy. With the defeat, the Leathernecks move to 2-3 on the season.

The lone run came from Holly Hoelting's eighth career home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the second inning to put Western ahead 1-0.

Detroit got on the board in the top of the fourth with two runs to take the lead and then scored two more in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Nina Maggio singled through the left side and moved to second following a ground out. Hoelting and Payton Abbott then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, but they were left stranded at the end of the inning.

The Titans would tack on one more insurance run in the seventh inning to pull ahead 5-1.

Hoelting walked for the second time in the top of the seventh. Abbott and Taylor Messer then hit consecutive singles, but the rally wasn't enough as the bases were left loaded at the end of the game.

Maggio went 2-for-3 with two singles and walk, while Hoelting went 2-for-2 with two walks, a home run and a single. Messer also recorded two hits. Brooke Stulga got the start in the circle, throwing 4 1/2 innings with four strikeouts and three earned runs.

The 2017 season continues next weekend as the Leathernecks travel to Bowling Green, Ky. for the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Classic hosted by Western Kentucky on Feb. 18-19.
