Leathernecks Edged by Miami Ohio, Belmont

Western falls to the Redhawks 4-3 and the Bruins 5-4

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Western Illinois softball team took on Miami (Ohio) and Belmont on the opening day of the Hilltopper Classic. The Leathernecks dropped both games by scores of 4-3 and 5-4, respectively, to drop to 2-5 on the season.

GAME ONE: Miami (Ohio) 4, Western Illinois 3

Rachel Beatty got the Leathernecks on the board with a leadoff home run in the top of the first, her first of the season. In the top of the second, Aly Compton tripled down the right field line and was brought home following an RBI single from Beatty to give Western a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Redhawks hit back-to-back solo home runs to even things up by a score of 2-2.

Emily Ira singled through the right side to lead things off in the top of the sixth. Taylor Messer then collected a sacrifice bunt to move Ira over to second, and Compton's single to right field advanced her to third. Beatty would then walk to load the bases for Nina Maggio, who walked in Ira to give Western its lead back 3-2.

The tying run for the Redhawks reached on an error in the bottom of the sixth and a two-run shot gave Miami the 4-3 lead. Western couldn't answer in the top of the seventh as they fell 4-3.

Beatty went 2-for-3 with a home run, single, a walk and two RBIs. Compton also went 2-for-3, scoring one run. Ira got the start in the circle, pitching a complete game with six strikeouts.

GAME TWO: Belmont 5, Western Illinois 4

Western found themselves down 3-0 after four innings of play. The Leathernecks' first hit of the game came in the fifth inning behind Payton Abbott's second-career home run over the left field fence.

The bats continued to come alive that inning after Meghan Henson hit a double to center field, bringing on Amanda Manton to pinch run. Halle Hollatz then launched an RBI-double down the left field line to put Western within one, 3-2. Jasmine Lara hit the game-tying RBI with a triple that scored Hollatz.

In the top of the fifth, the Bruins were able to string together a pair of singles and pulled ahead 5-3.

The Leathernecks didn't back down as Maggio drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Maggio then found her way home after Holly Hoelting reached first base on a Bruin error.
Western tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh following a leadoff single from Hollatz. Lara then collected a sacrifice hit that moved her to second and brought on Ira to pinch run. Maggio smacked a double to left field, but Ira was thrown out at home to end the game as the Bruins hung on 5-4.

Abbott went 2-for-2 with a home run and a single. She also collected a career-high five strikeouts in the circle over five and a half innings. Hollatz went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
