Leathernecks Have Successful Outing at GVSU Big Meet, Fighting Scot Invitational

 ALLENDALE, Mich. & MONMOUTH, Ill. – For the second straight week, the Western Illinois track and field team split squads on Saturday (Feb. 11). Part of the team competed at the GVSU Big Meet while the other part stayed close to home for the Fighting Scot Invitational, hosted by Monmouth College.
 
GVSU BIG MEET:
 
The Leathernecks continued to rewrite the record books as they recorded two new top ten marks. Alyssa Johnson now ranks sixth all-time in 400 with a personal best of 58.08. The women's distance medley relay team made up of Jacey Roper, Abigail Richter, Nicole Beebe and Jaclyn Finney ran 12:33.91 to rank ninth in program history.
 
Charles Morrow IV placed 10th in the 60-meters with a time of 7.07 and ran a personal record of 22.58 in the 200. Bo Brasseur led the women in the sprints, running a time of 25.81 in the 200.
 
In the distance events, Madison Lefler paced the women in the 3,000 with a seasonal best of 10:54.79, while Corey Thompsen led the men with a time of 9:25.99.
 
Josh Kirby qualified for finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.53. Josh Thomas just missed finals with a time of 8.63.
 
In the field events, Khalyia Lawson led Western in both the long jump and triple jump, leaping to marks of 17-5 1/2 and 36-10 1/4, respectively. Matt Simmons also set a new personal best in the long jump of 21-5 1/4.
 
In the throws, Allison Richter led WIU in the shot put with a throw of 40-7 ¾ and Abbi Smith tossed 45-0 ½ in the weight throw.
 
FIGHTING SCOT INVITATIONAL:
 
Several Leathernecks set new personal bests and recorded top-ten finishes. Raytoria Richardson led the team in both the 200 and the 400, recording personal bests of 26.25 and 1:01.54, respectively.
 
Mani Lock qualified for finals with a new best of 8.04 in the 60-meters and finished eighth overall. Jasmin Duncan also qualified for finals in the 60-meter hurdles, racing to a new best time of 10.87 to finish eighth.
 
Megan Reed led the team in the jumps, leaping to a new personal best of over a foot in the long jump of 17-2. She also placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 36-0.
 
Josh Swope set a new personal best of 6-4 1/4 in the high jump to place third. Brad Walls placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 53-1. Daniel Campagna threw a personal record of over four feet in the shot put of 41-4 1/4. Noah Willoughby led the team in the sprints, setting a new 60-meter personal best of 7.26.
 
Next Saturday, the Leathernecks will compete in their final tuneup before The Summit League Championship at the Orange & Blue Invitational on Feb. 18, hosted by Illinois.
