MACOMB, Ill. —
After multiple chances as a result of staying on the attack, Western Illinois was able to put one in the back of the net off the foot of Emily Bollman for the 1-0 win Sunday (Oct. 8) over the Fort Wayne Mastodons.

Western Illinois and Fort Wayne were scoreless at the half, but the Leathernecks saw multiple chances in the early going of the second. A Mastodon handball in the box gave Western Illinois a penalty kick in the 55th minute, but Bianca Romay's shot nailed the left post and ricocheted back to her. Romay's second shot flew just high of the crossbar. Shots from Ashley Kuhlmann and Madeline Edwards followed that sequence, but they were saved and just wide of the net, respectively.

Bollman contributed to the Leathernecks' offensive onslaught after her shot was saved, but she was finally rewarded a minute later, as Lauryn Peters found her in stride with a long pass from just over midfield to go up 1-0. Despite being unable to go up another goal with the continued attack, the Leathernecks were able to hold off the Mastodons and improve to 1-1-0 overall in The Summit League.

"It was one of those chess matches today," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "They [Fort Wayne] decided to play with three in the back and we tried to keep our three forwards up higher. It can be a little bit of a gamble defensively, but our backline and keeper have been playing better, and our midfield was phenomenal. It was four versus three in the midfield, so we just rotated, especially in the second half. Our three were able to stop their four in the second half, which was huge. Obviously were able to create a lot of second chances and finally got one after a couple of close shots."

Bollman led the way with her 56th minute goal off a pair of shots on goal, while Romay, Kuhlmann and Edwards also had two shots on goal. In net, Ines Palmiero Herrera totaled five saves.

"I think winning at home is a confidence builder," said Johnson. "We have two coming up, and we know they will be difficult, but we will go in with an idea of knowing how to play them. The confidence is there and it's just a matter of coming out to execute and working as hard as we did today."

Western Illinois returns to John MacKenzie Alumni Field Friday (Oct. 13) for a 3 p.m. Summit League showdown with the North Dakota State Bison.
