Leathernecks Blanked By Bison

Western Illinois outshoots North Dakota State but loses 2-0

MACOMB, Ill. — Despite outshooting North Dakota State by a significant margin Friday (Oct. 13), the Western Illinois Leathernecks' faltered 2-0 to the Bison at John Mackenzie Field.

The match was scoreless through the first half, but the Bison struck in the 60th minute. Malley O'Brien found the back of the net off a feed from Danielle Algera to put North Dakota State ahead.

The Bison added to that advantage in the 75th minute. Malana Vachon found Marian Taiwo at the top of the box. Taiwo twirled around a defender and shot past Western Illinois keeper Ines Palmiero Herrera to make it 2-0 North Dakota State.

"We did everything we could today to get the game, but everything we did in our attacking was soft and right to the keeper," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "There weren't any dangerous opportunities. We made two mistakes, and they scored on both mistakes."

Western Illinois outshot North Dakota State by a margin of 21-9, including 7-4 on goal. Lauryn Peters totaled four shots, two of which were on goal. Madeline Edwards also recorded four shots, one on net. Meanwhile, Natalie Nagle, Bianca Romay, Emily Bollman and Alexandra Siavelis each compiled a pair of shots.

"I thought for big chunks of the game, we were okay," Johnson said. "We had a chance to win a game at home, but in the last final third (of the pitch), we did nothing dangerous. We have to get better in the last 30 yards."

In net, Palmeiro Herrera totaled two saves. Bison keeper Monica Polgar registered seven stops.

Western Illinois hosts South Dakota State for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday. Prior to kickoff, the Leathernecks will honor their senior class on Senior Day.
