Leathernecks Fall on Senior Day to South Dakota State

Six Leatherneck women's soccer student-athletes recognized postgame on the Northwest Field

MACOMB, Ill. - On a cold and windy day afternoon on the Northwest Field at Western Illinois, the Leathernecks (2-12) fell to South Dakota State (7-4-3), 3-0 on Senior Day. Six Leatherneck women's soccer student-athletes, Jennifer Currie, Michaela Cody, Carly Hoffman, Devan Jones, Mary Street and Alexandra Siavelis, played their final home game at Western Illinois.

"It is always difficult to say goodbye to the seniors, especially when the season isn't over. The girls today were not my recruits, but they are incredible student-athletes," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "They all work hard and care about the rest of the girls. The biggest thing we lose with this group is leadership. We wish them the best after soccer. "

The Jackrabbits got things going early in the 10th minute off of the foot of Annie Williams, who was assisted by Nicole Hatcher. The Leathernecks had two opportunities in the 13th minute, as Lauryn Peters and Bianca Romay both had strikes. Peters' shot was blocked by South Dakota State defenders and Romay's shot went high.

South Dakota State put in another early goal in the first half when Tori Poole headed it past Ines Palmiero to put the Jackrabbits up by two.

Down 2-0 at the break, the Leathernecks regrouped and had another opportunity to put a goal in the back of the net. However, Madeline Edwards headed a ball just above the crossbar. Nicole Hatchers scored in the 64th minute for the Jackrabbits to put them up 3-0.

The Leathernecks could not find any opportunities in the final minutes and fell 3-0. Palmiero and Jennifer Currie split time in the net as Palmiero logged 77 minutes and Curries played the last 13.

Western gets back to action on Oct. 20 on the road at South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D. First kick is set for 4 p.m.
