Leathernecks Fall At South Dakota Off Late Goal

Western dropped a 1-0 contest to the Coyotes in Vermillion.

VERMILLION, S.D. — In a late-match goal, the Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer program dropped a 1-0 contest at South Dakota Friday (Oct. 20).
 
The Leathernecks had multiple scoring opportunities off a pair of shots by Madeline Edwards and Natlatie Nagle that were saved in the 32nd and 33rd minutes.
 
Western continued its offensive pressure off shots by Stacie Wolfgram and Alexandra Siavelis that were wide and high of the net. South Dakota eventually went up 1-0 in the 69th minute off a goal that was put into the left corner of the net by Kellee Willer off an assist from Amanda Carpio.
 
From there, Madeline Edwards was able to get a shot off in the 76th minute, but it was saved by the Coyote keeper. The Leathernecks had one last chance at the equalizer in the 89th minute off a shot by Devan Jones, but South Dakota was able to get the save and hold on for the 1-0 win.
 
The Purple and Gold were outshot 16-11and 7-5 for shots-on-goal. In net, Ines Palmiero Herrera recorded six saves, while Madeline Edwards led the way with a team-high three shots and two on goal. Nagle also recorded a pair of shots on goal.  
 
Western Illinois returns to action Sunday (Oct. 22) on the road at Denver for a 1 p.m. first kick. The final regular season match is scheduled for Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. against Omaha.
