Women’s Tennis Sweeps 7-0 over Knox College

Leathernecks conclude fall season at ITA Regionals Oct. 19-23.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's tennis team swept Knox College on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 1) with a score of 7-0.

"Today's match with an improved Knox College Team was another good experience on the court this fall that we hope to carry on to our spring season," said head coach Mirko Bjelica.

Western would win every doubles matchup. Courtney Lubbers and Natalia Bravo won their match 6-2 in No. 1 spot. In No. 2 doubles, Cary Milanes and Laura Ballesteros defeated The Prairie Fire 6-1. Maria Bessmertnaya and Andrea Haines also won 6-0 over their opponents in the final doubles spot.

Success in doubles carried over to the single parts of the match as all six Leathernecks picked up victories.

Five Leathernecks swept their opponents. In No. 1 singles. Bravo defeated her matchup 6-1. 6-0. Lubbers won 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. Ballesteros won 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3 singles. Ballesteros (6-0, 6-1) and Milanes (6-1, 6-0) both swept their opponents in No. 4 and No. 5 singles.

Andrea Haines would be part of another victory Sunday when she won her singles match 6-2. 2-6, 10-5 in the No. 6 singles spot.

"All our team members did well, but I especially want to commend Andrea Haines for walking onto the team just over two weeks ago and already contributing with a hard fought win at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles," said Bjelica

Western is back in action for ITA Regionals in Lawrence, Kan. Starting on Oct. 19 and lasting until to Oct. 23.
