MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University women's tennis program continued its fall slate with strong performances at the Redbird Duals, earning multiple wins in both singles and doubles action across the weekend.
On Friday's opening day, the Leathernecks picked up momentum with a pair of doubles victories. Richardlyne Francois and Jessica Hess teamed up to defeat Saint Louis 6-4, while Nadezhda Petkova and Mana Fawcett claimed a 6-2 win. In singles play, Chloé Routier battled past Bradley's Mariia Pukhina in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Maarja Leinstrep also grabbed a victory, defeating Bradley's Compassion Tsai 6-0, 7-6(3). Denver Johnson capped off the day with a decisive 6-0, 6-3 win over Saint Louis' E. Chote.
Day two featured another highlight for WIU, as Leinstrep secured a 6-4 victory over Illinois State's Lindh before her opponent was forced to retire. Francois, Routier, Johnson, and Fawcett all battled hard against the Redbirds but ultimately fell in close matches. Hess was also in a strong position against ISU's Iosio, leading 6-3, 2-2, before play was halted.
The Leathernecks now turn their attention to the Ohio Valley Conference match-up in Brentwood, Tenn., scheduled for Sept. 26-27.
