Leatherneck Women’s Tennis Opens Fall with Strong Showing at SEMO Invite

The Western Illinois University women's tennis program had a successful start to the fall campaign this weekend, pulling off some big wins at the SEMO Fall Invite.

On Friday, the Leathernecks scored major wins, taking two of three singles matches against Maryville, then winning one of three doubles matches vs. SEMO. Western Illinois took their other doubles match, winning three of four against Maryville. Denver Johnson picked up her first singles win over SEMO 6-3, 6-2. 

On day two, Mana Fawcett picked up a victory, winning 7-5, 7-5. Western Illinois newcomer, Maarja Leinstrep, then introduced herself to the program with authority, winning 6-1, 6-3. Richardlyne Francois fell short 6-3, 6-3; Chloe Routier fell 7-6, 6-3; and Denver Johnson fell 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 against Maryville, and 6-4 and 6–2 against SEMO.

Against UMSL, the doubles team of Chloe Routier and Maarja Leinstrep scored a win at doubles, triumphing 7-6. Fawcett and Gueblaoui secured the doubles win with a matching 6-3 victory.

The Leathernecks faced off against Maryville, with Anna-Evelina Trush and Denver Johnson winning their doubles 6-4, with Routier and Leinstrep winning doubles 6-4. Francois and Nadezhda Petkova faced SEMO and won 6-4. 

The Leathernecks will go on to compete at the Redbird Duals this weekend (Sep. 19-20), with Illinois State hosting.
