Steve McShane Named MVFC Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Sophomore running back earns his first weekly honor

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Western Illinois' Steve McShane (Freeport/Freeport) set a career-high in the team's season-opening win at Eastern Illinois last Thursday. The sophomore running back was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference 'Co-Offensive Player of the Week' for his efforts. The conference office announced the winners on Sunday (Sept. 4).

It marks the first weekly award for McShane, who gained 207 yards on 28 attempts and scored two rushing touchdowns. He plunged across from a yard out on 4th-and-goal to open Western's scoring in the 38-21 victory, then capped it off with a personal-best 70-yard touchdown run.

McShane added a team-leading 56 yards on four receptions. His 70-yard run was the longest in 16 years by a Leatherneck, and when he surpassed the 200-yard mark, he became the first WIU back to accomplish that feat since 2008.

The 20th-ranked Leathernecks open their home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 10, playing host to 16th-ranked Northern Arizona. Kickoff at Hanson Field is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tickets are on sale by calling (309) 298-1190 or purchase online at www.GoLeathernecks.com.
