Western Illinois Falls To Denver In Summit League Match

The Leathernecks fell 1-0 to the Pioneers at home.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at home to Denver in its first Summit League match of the season on Friday (Sept. 30).

"It's not the way we wanted to start off, but I'm happy with the effort and I think defensively, our backline was solid," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We had a couple chances, but most of it was from deep. They had a good finish on their goal, but we didn't get the result we wanted, so we'll have to regroup and focus on Sunday."

The Pioneers' (4-7, 1-0) goal came in the 28th minute as Riley Welch scored from 15 yards out in the center of the field.
Western (2-7-1, 0-1) saw multiple chances, including a shot by Madeline Edwards that went just wide of the net in the 23rd minute. In the second half, Edwards had another shot opportunity, but it was saved in the 52nd minute.

"We had a couple of chances. Those chances weren't great but they gave us opportunities to tie, but just didn't happen for us. I'm pleased that we kept them in front of us for big parts of the game and did not quit," said Johnson. "We have to create more opportunities. We have time and space, but we need to keep our head on a swivel. Denver had a good game plan and was able to defend solid in the second half."

The Leathernecks had more shot opportunities between the 75th and 81st minutes by Mary Street, Edwards and Michaela Cody.

Edwards led the way with three shots and a shot on goal. In net, Jennifer Currie recorded four saves.

"We have to pass the ball and use our technique. We have to rely on having better technique and most of that is with having better vision and staying more composed," said Johnson.

The Leathernecks return to action Sunday, Oct. 2 at noon for their second Summit League match against South Dakota. Kickoff takes place at John MacKenzie Alumni Field and the match will be streamed live on ESPN3.
