Leathernecks Shut Out South Dakota 1-0

WIU picks up its first Summit League win of the season with victory over Coyotes

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois Leathernecks women's soccer team picked up its first Summit League win of the season on Sunday (Oct. 2) with a 1-0 victory over South Dakota.

A 48th-minute goal by Emily Bollman--her third of the season--was all Western Illinois needed to beat the Coyotes.

"It was a perfect shot and a perfect time for us to get one. We were then able to hold on and I thought we were better in the second half," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "I thought after we got the goal, we settled in a little bit. We knew that as a team, if we worked hard, we could get the win. We had to use our bench after a tough game on Friday, but we had a lot of energy."

After a scoreless first half, the Leathernecks jumped right out of the gate for an early second half goal. Bollman took the ball to the right side of the box and drove the ball directly over the keeper and into the back of the net unassisted.

For the final 15 minutes of the match, Western was able to hold off the Coyotes with their defense. The 81st minute saw back-to-back shots by South Dakota, but they went wide of the net. The Leathernecks were able to secure the win to improve to 1-1 in Summit League play.

"I thin,k on this Summit League schedule with Friday-Sunday matches, if you don't have a deep bench, then that second match is going to be tough," Johnson said. "Our bench showed up today and we got a lot of life out of them, so that was important for us.  I think we were able to fight inside the box defensively, and realize that we have to get shutouts."

Individually, Bollman, Brianna Hughes and Madeline Edwards recorded two shots with a shot on goal apiece. Overall, South Dakota outshot the Leathernecks 13-6 and recorded more corner kicks (6-1), but Western recorded a 6-4 shot-on-goal advantage.

The Leathernecks return to action for a pair of road matches against South Dakota State and North Dakota State. Western takes on the Jackrabbits on Friday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m., followed by an Oct. 9 matchup against the Bison at 1 p.m.
