Sean McGuire, Brett Taylor Named MVFC Player of the Week

Two of Western Illinois’ team captains earn weekly award

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Missouri Valley Football Conference announced the Players of the Week and two of Western Illinois' team captains picked up the weekly award. Sophomore quarterback Sean McGuire (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) was named 'Offensive Player of the Week' while junior linebacker Brett Taylor (Macomb/Macomb) was selected 'Defensive Player of the Week'.

It marks the first weekly award for both Leathernecks, however, not the first time in their careers receiving weekly accolades.

Taylor earned his third career MVFC award. McGuire earlier in the day was chosen the National 'Offensive Player of the Week' by College Sports Madness. In his first collegiate start last year McGuire was a MVFC 'Co-Newcomer of the Week' selection and also a 'National Freshman of the Week' winner.

Taylor recorded a game-high 13 tackles in the 28-23 win over Northern Illinois, of which 12 were solo stops. He came up with a big stop on fourth down late in the game, stopping NIU's quarterback a yard shy from moving the chains in the redzone with 2:50 remaining.

McGuire threw for 315 yards and accounted for two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing). He finished 21-of-37 passing while rushing for 11 yards. The offense did not commit a turnover for the third straight game, as the Leathernecks captured their first FBS victory since September 2003.

Taylor moved up to fourth nationally averaging a MVFC-leading 12.0 tackles and 8.0 solo tackles per game. McGuire stands 21st nationally averaging 253.3 passing yards per game and 42nd with 12.0 points per game responsible for. His 138.6 passing efficiency ranks him 36th in the country.

The 12th-ranked Leathernecks open Missouri Valley Football Conference play Saturday (Oct. 1) on the road, traveling to South Dakota State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game can be seen live on ESPN3.
