MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois University Athletics wrapped up spring football Saturday afternoon with its annual Spring Game at Hanson Field, as the Purple defeated the Gold, 54–41.
The scrimmage capped off 14 practices and gave the Leathernecks a chance to compete in a game-like setting heading into the offseason. Both sides of the ball had their moments, with the offense showing big-play ability and the defense responding with key stops throughout the day.
Head Coach Joe Davis liked the way his team competed to close out the spring.
"Really pleased with the offense's ability to move the ball and the defense's ability, especially inside the hashes, to tackle really well," Davis said. "A lot of positives, and like I've told the team, there's still a lot of work to do before fall camp starts."
Several players stood out during the scrimmage, including Jacob Kania, Nick Reinicke, Jouvenson Romulus, Kennedy McGill, and Cason Carswell, who each made plays throughout the afternoon.
Following the conclusion of spring practice, the Leathernecks also announced their summer captains, as voted on by their teammates: Nick Reinickie, James Durand, Keshawn Harrington-McKinney, Kennedy McGill, Jake Kruger, and Cason Carswell.
With spring practice complete, Western Illinois now turns its attention to summer workouts and preparation for fall camp.
